GAVIN BASKERVILLE:
In Denial
Melbourne
International Comedy Festival 2002
In Denial was Gavin's first Melbourne International Comedy Festival
show and was one half of a double bill with Terri Psiakis.
Facing the realities of turning 30 and having nothing to show for it,
In Denial was half an hour of Gavin's best stand-up focused on
finally facing being a 'grown-up'.
The show played to sold out crowds and was a great success paving the
way for Gavin's follow up shows, Successful Losing and
100% Guaranteed.
REVIEW:
Gavin Baskerville is In Denial
this year He's just turned 30 and in his show he tells us all about
what he thought his life would be like by this point and what it
really is like. Gavin has a fantastic relaxed style on stage that
makes you feel like he is having a comfortable chat with you.
The only jolt to this is when he stuns you by coming out with a
surprise punch line that doesn't go where you expect it to (most
often its in the realms of "you can't say that") and makes you laugh
twice as hard as you thought possible. Whether you are 30 yet or not
it is easy to relate to Gavin's own experiences of not meeting up to
your own ideas and expectations of what your life should be like and
how you deal with the milestones along the road.
When Terri Psiakis takes the stage there is a different feel
entirely You really are getting two separate shows here Terri is a
master at setting the audience up in familiar ground. She talks
about the celebrities we all know and the situations we all face and
manages to find the humour in it all. Some of these targets are
easy, like Winona and Tasmania, but Terri has the knack of seeing
beyond the obvious joke and covering some new ground. It's good to
see a female comic not relying on that title. Terri doesn't make her
comedy more female, she doesn't deal with any ground that men and
women alike wouldn't find familiar. She doesn't do comedy targeted
for a particular audience, she just does human humour. When there
are so many stand up shows on offer it is hard to know who to go and
see. This show has the advantage of offering you two comics for the
price of one for starters, but the other bonus is that both have
some fantastic material that makes this show a cut above the rest.
